AN ATTEMPT TO DESIGN A STANDARD VESSEL FOR MANY TRADES AND CARGOES-LEADING TO MORE ECONOMIC SEA TRANSPORTATION
To illustrate how money is spent in shipping, the author has selected a modern ship of 12000 dwt, with a diesel engine of 9500 hp, a speed of 16 knots, and a draught of 7.7 m at a building price of about 17.5 million dollars. Four sections are examined: operating expenses, fuel costs, port and canal dues and capital costs. Only the last one lends itself to improvement. And it is shown how the standard ship can achieve this. Dimensions of four ships in the 5000 to 40000 dwt range are given.
