RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ORE PRESSURE DISTRIBUTION IN THE ORE CARRIER HOLD AND HULL TRANSVERSE STRENGTH

The theory of Prof. Y. Yamamoto et al. concerning the behavior of ore in the ship hold was programed and compared with the results of experiments conducted at the Institute for Technical Research of Ships, Ministry of Transport. Using the above program, calculation analyses were made on one ore carrier structure model and five actual ore carriers; as a result of the analyses, the following conclusions were obtained. 1. Ore pressure distribution on the double bottom is constant irrespective of the slope of the ore mound, while it is proportional to that slope in such a wide hold as in the bulk carrier. 2. The stress of the transverse ring, when the ship is subjected to wave pessure from the outside, it little affected by the existence of ore in the hold. 3. The axial force of struts is increased by about 10 to 33% due to the existence of ore in the hold. 4. An investigation required on the transverse strength or the ore carrier subjected to wave pressure from the outside can be attained by making calculation of the strength without taking account of ore, and thereafter by modifying its results according to the effects of the preceding item, 3.
