LATERAL EARTH PRESSURE AT REST IN SOFT CLAY-DISCUSSION
It is noted that the paper presents valuable field measurement on lateral earth pressures at rest (K sub o condition) by five different testing methods. Based on their work, significant relationships between the overconsolidation ratio (OCR) and the coefficient of earth pressure at rest, K sub o are described. Present research conducted by the discusser is aimed at evaluating K sub o values in a specially designed testing apparatus called at a "stress meter". The stress meter has the capacity to measure active and neutral stresses generated during both loading and unloading. The relationship between the field data presented in the paper and the K sub o that could have been obtained using the stress meter is described. It is noted that there is a reasonably good correlation between the field values reported and the one's obtained by the discusser.
