AN OVERVIEW OF A CASDAC SUBSYSTEM-COMPUTER-AIDED PIPING DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION
The computer-aided piping design and construction program (CAPDAC) described is a sub-system of the large-scale integrated computer-aided ship design and construction program (CASDAC) which is being developed by the U.S. Navy. CAPDAC is intended to aid shipyard and design personnel in the design of piping systems and to provide data required for planning and construction. Progress to date includes development of programs, consultations with industry, and an analysis of the piping design process which is discussed at some lengths. Current work on a piping composite drawing sub-system is reviewed, and attempts to automate the piping fabrication process are discussed. Numerous shipyards and other shipping organizations are co-operating with the U.S. Navy in the further development of CAPDAC. The Author points out that ship machinery and service piping systems can be responsible for 20 to 30% of the total ship design effort and 13% of the construction labor cost.
