WESTERN OFFSHORE NO. IX--FROM TANKER FOREBODY TO "GO ANYWHERE" DRILLSHIP

The Western Offshore No. IX is a modern drillship converted by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for the Western Offshore Drilling and Exploration Co. (Wodeco) using the forebody of the 41,000-dwt tanker Cities Service Valley Forge, built in 1954. The tanker forebody represents two-thirds of the total length of the new ship. A very detailed description, together with general-arrangement plans, is given of the construction and equipment of the ship, which can drill to depths of 7,600 m in waters approaching 300-m deep. The Diesel-electric propulsion system comprises six G.M. Diesel alternator sets, each rated at 2,500 kW a.c., the engines producing 3600 bhp at 900 rpm. Each of the two five-bladed nozzle-enclosed propellers is driven by a twin-armature reversible motor taking d.c. at 600 V.
