SOLUTIONS TO COMMUNICATING INFORMATION TO PORT CONTROL

The paper discusses the information requirements of a port control system and indicates time phases during which particular information is required. To improve efficiency and reduce work load, it is suggested that a graphical representation of data, based upon time-distance coordinates, would provide a reasonable solution to the problem of correlating ship and tidal information. Methods of implementing this in a dynamic form using modern computer techniques are indicated. The use of microprocessors, floppy discs, and color graphics are considered and an example configuration of a low cost 'stand alone' terminal is given. Alternative methods using an available computer are also discussed.
