CABLE-STAYED BRIDGES. THEORY AND DESIGN

The author describes the evolution and basic concepts of cable-stayed bridge systems. Various types of cable-stayed bridges are reviewed (one-plane and two-plane bridges, inclined tower bridges, railroad and railroad/highway bridges, concrete cable-stayed bridges and pedestrian bridges); the following structural details are discussed: stiffening girders and trusses, towers, types of cable, modulus of elasticity, permissible strength, fatigue tests and strength of the cables, behaviour of bent cables, cable supports on the towers, anchoring of the cables at the deck, stiffening girder anchorages, erection methods, and adjustment of the cables. Approximate and exact methods of structural analysis are outlined together with model analysis and design methods. The last chapter deals with the aerodynamic stability of structures. Brief mention is made of pipe bridge in Pretoria, South Africa. /TRRL/
