COACHES: WHO'LL COME TO THE AID OF THE PARTIES?
The article discusses causes of some recent fatal crashes involving coaches and suggests possible means for their prevention. The author expresses concern on the standard of psv drivers, their hours of work, the standard of vehicle maintenance, methods of enforcement and the protection current coaches provide passengers in the event of an accident. Investigations show that psv drivers are often dangerously tired. Although psv roadside checks are permissible they are rarely conducted because of the inconvenience to passengers. However recent investigations by inspectors in the Yorkshire area and the north-west have shown that almost nine per cent of vehicles examined were unfit. A study is being conducted at Cranfield to devise structures which are less collapsible without affecting stability. /TRRL/
