CONSTITUTIVE LAWS FOR SAND IN DYNAMIC SHEAR
An important class of problems in soil dynamics is characterized by simple shear deformations. Such problems include the determination of the response of horizontal layers of sand and various compositions and drainage conditions to excitation by earthquake motions consisting of shear waves propagating vertically upwards. Previously derived constitutive laws applicable to dry or saturated undrained sand are discussed and extended to include the contemporaneous generation and dissipation of pore-water pressure that occurs when saturated sands are allowed to drain during shaking. The constitutive laws are applied to field problems involving settlements in dry sands and liquefaction of saturated sands during earthquakes.
