JAPANESE DEVELOP LOW CARBON HEAT TREATED PRESTRESSING STEEL

The author reports that a low carbon (about 0.4 percent) induction heat treated steel introduced to the Japanese prestressed precast industry in 1965 has a well-defined yield point above 0.9fs' . Bars up to 17 mm in diameter can have warm formed button heads applied, and rolled threads can be applied to any size required. The same manufacturer has recently developed a silicon-chrome alloy adaptation of the low carbon heat treated steel for the American market. Results of fatigue, stress relaxation, prestress transfer length, and accelerated stress corrosion tests on the new steel are reported, with indications that stress corrosion characteristics are similar to those of stress relieved strand.
