THE ROLE OF THE CLASSIFICATION SOCIETY IN MODERN SHIPPING

Throughout the world, shipowners, builders and designers depend upon the classification societies for essential services. As the international merchant marine has been expanding and modernizing, the American Bureau of Shipping has been keeping abreast of its needs by undergoing a similar transformation. New construction techniques and building materials, the phenomenal increase in the size of the largest tankers, and the development of such specialized structures as liquefied gas carriers have profoundly influenced plan approval and test and inspection methods utilized by the Bureau. The progress being made at sea has also encouraged the Bureau to widen the scope of its services, and also to initiate research programs that will help the maritime industry solve the next generation of technological problems. This paper discusses the responsibility of private industry in providing a large degree of self-regulation and stresses how the classification society can help attain this.
