IMPACT OF HIGHWAY EXPANSION ON COMMUNITY NOISE LEVELS
Noise impacts associated with transportation facilities may be classified as follows: primary impacts, or long-term changes in noise levels in a transportation corridor due to highway improvements; secondary impacts or long-term changes in noise levels in the community surrounding the transportation corridor; and noise impacts associated with construction of proposed highway improvements. In areas of sensitive residential land use, where local opposition to proposed highway improvements is anticipated, coordination with relevant review agencies and community interest groups is extremely important. This coordination is discussed and the resulting methodology developed for the Kalanianaole Highway Noise Study in Hawaii is presented.
