CYCLING IN THE DARK: AN ANALYSIS OF FATAL BICYCLE ACCIDENTS IN THE NETHERLANDS
This paper presents statistical data on the proportions of daytime and dusk/nighttime cycling in urban and rural areas and the respective proportions of accidents. Survey data show that the average percentage of encounters between cyclists and traveling motor vehicles throughout the year is 92% during the day and 8% at night. However, the risk of having a fatal collision is nearly 4 times greater under conditions of darkness. In addition, the risk of a fatal impact was shown to be particularly great for head-tail collisions in rural areas at night.
