INSTANT DRAUGHTSMAN IN THE DOCKYARD
The updating of ships' plans for maintenance or refit purposes requires a lot of time using draftsman. A recent refit of a Polaris submarine, for instance, took three years, largely because the internal layout had to be recorded by hand. Specto-photogrammetry, long used in terristrial survey work and architecture, could revolutionise the building and maintenance of ships. In trying out the technique the Royal Navy has been producing instant drawings prior to a major refit of its oldest warship, HMS Victory.
