ACTIVATORS LOWER COSTS OF BULK CARGO HANDLING
A new method for shortening the unloading time and reducing material-handling costs on self-unloading, bulk-carrying ships and barges has undergone successful pilot tests. The idea: Treat the ship or barge like a big storage bin, adding activators beneath the holds in a way that makes most of the cargo mobile, active and free-flowing. The system is estimated to cut unloading time by 25 percent or more, lower costs by more than $100,000 a year per vessel.
