STRUCTURAL SUPPORTS
Structural support in a tunnel maintains a stable, usable and economical underground opening and prevents settlement in the surrounding media or adjacent structures. The design of structural supports incorporates the following considerations: media through which the tunnel is to be driven, methods of excavation, function of support, time of support installation, and method of load imposition. Only when the total system of construction is considered can the proper structural support be provided. Some structural supports currently in use are briefly described. Further research is needed to provide more accurate and complete data for support design as well as to verify existing methods of design. Also, demonstration of new design methods and types of supports should be tried in a full-sized tunnel. These demonstrations would further permit both primary and secondary supports to be designed more economically.
