SLOPED RUNWAY DESIGN FOR AIRPORTS
This article considers a new aspect in airport runway design with the introduction of a slope factor for the runway, a feature which will allow aircraft to attain a quicker takeoff as well as to land safely over a much shorter runway length. Savings in energy-fuel for both takeoff and landing are described. Reduction of aircraft noise, increase in aerodynamic stability by quicker lift-off, lower requirement for long runways and, correspondingly, less waste of land for runway space, increased operational range and payload of aircraft using such stoped runways, and higher use frequency of the runways by aircraft are discussed.
