THE STRUCTURAL BEHAVIOUR OF A PRESTRESSED BOX BEAM WITH THIN WEBS UNDER COMBINED BENDING AND SHEAR
An account is given of the construction and testing of a large single cell prismatic box beam subjected to combined longitudinal and transverse bending and shear. The webs were precast in panels 0.75 M long, had an overall slenderness ratio of 33 and had no longitudinal continuity steel at the joints. The test was carried out at a shear span to depth ratio of 2.78; the specimen failed in web compression. Results presented include the load-overall deflexion diagram, the load-out of plane deflexion of the webs and the load-strain diagram of the concrete struts. The collapse load is compared with the appropriate clause in the Department of Environment technical memoradium. The results are also compared with those obtained from a non-linear finite element analysis and it is concluded that the model test probably underestimates the shear carrying capacity of the corresponding continuous prismatic beam.
