REGENERATION OF THE NON-SKID PROPERTIES OF CONCRETE MOTORWAY PAVEMENTS

REGENERATION DES PROPRIETES ANTIDERAPANTES DES CHAUSSEES D'AUTOROUTE EN BETON

Investigations were carried out at the lcpc to compare various methods of regenerating the non-skid properties of concrete motorway pavements, with a view to selecting the techniques to be applied to motorways in France. Experimental sections were built for the study of the effect of longitudinal grooves made with a diamond blade. The best arrangement of grooves (fine and close grooves) was determined, and the durability of the treatment was estimated. Transverse grooving carried out by means of percussion was also considered, and its effectiveness was compared with that of longitudinal grooving as regards longitudinal and transverse friction coefficients. A one-course surface dressing with two applications of precoated chippings was laid on experimental stretches along a highly-trafficked concrete motorway. The chippings were coated with a bituminous binder improved by the addition of polymers. The conclusion contains a review of all techniques of regenerating surfacings. Mention is made of the best method to use for a given type of motorway. The use of surface dressings on rural motorways is envisaged in the fairly near future. /TRRL/
