STERNTUBE SEALS AND PLASTIC BEARINGS--A SHIP OWNER'S DEVELOPMENTS AND EXPERIENCES
Modern elastomeric lip type stern seals equipped with fluorinated rubber sealing rings offer an improvement in simplicity and reliability over the older type of seal which incorporated a "guide ring" system together with nitrile rubber sealing rings. The use of ceramic coatings for stern seal liners can be accepted to reduce the incidence of liner wear and corrosion. The introduction of an oil lubricated reinforced plastic sterntube bearing material, as an alternative to white metal, has given excellent results under arduous service conditions. It has been noted from test rig investigations that a reinforced plastic bearing will accommodate comparatively high values of shaft misalignment without ill effects. The combination of a modern lip type stern seal and reinforced plastic bearing represents a very simple bearing and seal system which offers a high degree of operational availability under extraordinary conditions.
