CONDITION MONITORING EQUIPMENT FOR DIESEL ENGINES
A cylinder conditioning monitoring system type CYLDET 1800 (see ASEA Journal 1973:4, pp. 95-97) has been delivered by ASEA to "Europafarjan III," a combined car/passenger ferry owned by Lion Ferry AB, Halmstad, Sweden. The Europafarjan III has four 8-cylinder MaK main diesel engines type 9 M 453 AK, developing 9400 kW (12,800 b.h.p.) and giving the ship a maximum speed of about 20 knots. All 36 cylinders of the main propulsion machinery are continuously monitored with respect to the cylinder pressure, which amounts to 8 to 12 MPa (80 to 120 bar). It is possible to study in detail the pressure in each cylinder with the aid of an oscilloscope having a memory function or from pressure curves in the form of bar charts. The CYLDET 1800 equipment is the key to the solution of the problem of improved condition monitoring of marine propulsion machinery. Great interest has been shown in this question by ship-owners in view of the growing demands for lower maintenance costs. The equipment may be supplemented by additional modules for measuring and monitoring the temperature of the liner material, cylinder wear and cylinder surface temperature (see pamphlet TM 54-120 E).
