SOME ASPECTS OF FROST HEAVE PROBLEMS IN ROAD FOUNDATIONS
Certain soils show susceptibility to frost action when subject to freezing temperatures. Frost action occurs when water reaches the freezing front and ice lenses form. A complex set of phenomena takes place in a freezing soil: transport of water and salts, brine exclusion, phase-boundary transport, setting up of matric and osmotic suction gradients etc. Data on thermal, moisture and salt profiles obtained from two experiments utilising closed and open systems is presented and analysed. Frost susceptibility criteria are critically analysed and it is suggested that permeability values be included in such criteria. While the frost problem has not so far attracted much attention here, need exists to conduct a comprehensive study in cold regions in India to obtain information regarding the extent of frost problem in road foundations and devise methods for alleviation of the same. /Author/TRRL/
