BREAKWATER BUILT WITH CONCRETE PILES

Most breakwaters are built of big stones or large concrete boxes filled with sand and concrete. To build a harbor in Zueitina Libya, however, engineers used prestressed-concrete cylinder piles. The huge amounts of good-quality rock needed for the first alternative were unavailable in this northern part of Africa. Using boxes would have required building a shipyard or graving dock--too expensive. So using about 800 54-in. (137-cm)-diam. concrete piles was the cheapest alternative. Piles were driven by a ram-weight and high-pressure, high-volume water jets.
