COATING TREATMENT FOR REINFORCING STEEL
A method of treating steel reinforcement in order to protect it from corrosion during storage on site has been developed, consisting of removal of the oxidation (rust and mill scale) followed by application of a specially developed alkali-resistant polymer coating which has the appearance of, and is applied in the manner of a conventional paint. Tests are described, from which it is concluded that the coating system gives good protection to steel exposed to the atmosphere for at least one year. The bond between reinforcement and concrete is unaffected by the coating. Accelerated corrosion tests show that the coating remains intact in concrete and that under adverse conditions the steel is prevented from rusting and improved concrete durability is obtained. /TRRL/
