THE INFLUENCE OF THE ROAD SURFACE ON SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS OF TYRE PERFORMANCE
Although research has greatly improved tyre grip, skidding still accounts for 25% of all accidents in wet conditions. In attempting to improve road surfaces, delugrip road surfacing materials have been developed. This article discusses the optimum desirable properties of road surfaces and describes the design and performance of delugrip road surfacing materials in comparison with conventional materials. The surface, which is of dense, impermeable asphalt materials, is shown to have high skid resistance under wet conditions. Its macrotexture has been designed to optimise water removal, and reduce spray normally caused by the tyre pattern. Experiments have shown that delugrip generates less tyre-to-road noise than hot-rolled asphalt. The aggregates used in the material make it highly resistant to deformation. Its durability and effect on riding comfort are briefly discussed. /TRRL/
