COMPUTER SERVICES FOR PORT AND WATERWAY MANAGEMENT
The use of computers in port and waterway management has been long awaited in the maritime industry. Its use is presently being initiated in many ports of the world. The use of computers is a logical step because of their great versatility. In San Francisco they are being used experimentally as harbor movement regulating units. In this capacity the computer aids in providing for safer and faster harbor movement. Computers are being used in Long Beach as a source of data concerning off shore drilling. Other uses of computers include preparation of transit schedules, dissemination of pertinent traffic information to remote field locations and investigation into port congestion problems. In short the computers can be utilized in all executive, regulatory, planning and operational aspects of port and waterway management.
