SYSTEMATIC MODEL-TESTS WITH PUSHED BARGE TRAINS
The increased importance of the pushed barge-train in recent years has led to the need for owners and builders to know more about the resistance and behaviour of the various types of formation under different conditions. The Authors give a brief account of systematic tests, carried out at the VBD, to meet this need. Models, to 1:16 scale, of seven different types of formation, consisting of one to six barges of the Europa II types, were tested. Resistance, trim and sinkage, together with velocities, levels, and other variables of the water affected by the formation, were measured at different formation speeds and draughts and in different water-depths (these latter corresponded to different stretches of the Rhine). Wake measurements, well astern of the formation, were made with a four-barge (2x2) train, with and without the pusher tug. The results of many of the tests are presented in graphs, and are discussed.
