THE EFFECT OF FLAME STRAIGHTENING ON THE DEFORMATION BEHAVIOUR AND CORROSION RESISTANCE OF BOILER PLATE OF UNALLOYED AND ALLOYED STEELS
A thermal radiation method was used for measuring the maximum temperature reached in steel plates of varying chemical composition and thickness (5-13.3 mm) during heating with oxy-acetylene torches. The results are compared with calculated values of heating time and maximum temperature. Previous investigations of the parameters involved in the heating process, i.e. limiting temperature, maximum temperature at the surface of the workpiece, temperature across the thickness of the workpiece are discussed and calculation formulae presented. A program of mechanical testing was carried out to determine the effect of flame straightening on the strength properties of the steels. Corrosion tests were also performed to relate temperature with the occurence of intercrystalline corrosion and stress corrosion.
