BLAST PRIMERS

The use of blast primers or shot primers in the marine industry is a definite necessity in protecting shot blasted or grit blasted steel. There are approximately seventeen requirements which go into the making of a reliable primer. The article reviews these seventeen requirements. Among them are: application properties, rapid drying, fire hazards, economy, durability, corrosion prevention, resistance to sea water, fresh water and oil, fire resistance, compatibility with paint, cathodic protection, alkali resistance, stripping facility, toxicity, pyrogenic properties, minimum film thickness, welding and working properties. There are five basic primer media; (1) epoxy, single pack used with iron oxide, (2) epoxy, single pack used with zinc, (3) epoxy, two pack, (4) P.V.V., and (5) zinc silicates. The principal pigmentations include aluminum metallic, iron oxide, iron oxide/chromatic, zinc rich and reduced zinc.
