FITTING THE RUDDERS OF HIGH TONNAGE VESSELS
Modern supertankers carry rudders which must be able to withstand a lateral loading of as much as 320 tons and the rudders may be as much as 100 square meters in area and weigh 85 tons. Since the components attaching the rudder to the stock must be able to withstand these loads they may weigh as much as 200 kilograms. The SKF type HMU hydraulic nut, a tool for mounting and dismounting large taper bore roller bearings, has been slightly modified to meet the requirements of mounting large rudders. After the component is put in place the type HMU hydraulic nut is used to tighten the fitting. If it is a taper fitting the HMU becomes a permanent part of the installation. The HMU nut has been used for the pintles in the rudder installation and also for fitting the tiller to the rudder stock.
