EXPERIENCES IN THE PREPARATION AND CLEANING OF FUELS AND LUBRICATING OILS WITH CENTRIFUGES AND FILTERS

This is an extensive review of the shipboard cleaning, purifying, and clarifying of fuels and lubricating oils, and of the types and makes of centrifuges and filters available for these duties, together with information on the performance of this equipment. A number of recommendations are included. In his summary, the Author mentions that the Rules of most Classification Societies, while stressing the need for effective shipboard preparation of fuels and lubricating oils, have up to now given little detailed information on the equipment requirements for this task. Among the conclusions, it is stated that settling tanks must on no account be omitted from new construction. Centrifuges will not separate properly if overloaded, and should therefore be of adequate capacity. The dished-type centrifuge will work satisfactorily in heavy seas if the casing is properly balanced; the driving gears must be adequately lubricated (e.g., with an HD oil) if excessive wear is to be avoided. The single-chamber tube-type centrifuge, which is less expensive, is suitable for ships operating in calm waters, particularly with a very small crew. Large seagoing ships have been increasingly adopting filters for the purifying and clarifying of fuels and lubricating oils. The choice of fuel filter depends primarily on the fuel used. Preparation of heavy oils becomes a more difficult problem with increasing asphalt and paraffin contents; there can be chemical differences between bunkers having the same viscosity. Filters for heavy oils should be fully automatic. Some recommendations are also made concerning oily-water separators for bilges, to conform to anti-pollution regulations. There should be no conflict of opinion as to which is preferable, the centrifuge or the filter. Each has its own technical and economic range of applications.
