A COMPUTERIZED METHOD FOR THE PRELIMINARY DESIGN OF MAIN REDUCTION GEARS
A computer program was written which incorporates parameters of horsepower, turbine RPM, turbine center line distances, propeller RPM, pinion (L/D) ratio and "K" factor. Tooth bending and contact stresses are also computed for which additional inputs of pressure angle, helix angle and transverse diametral pitch are used. The output includes gear size and weight. For a two turbine input double reduction gear design, the program makes a geometrical check to insure that the first reduction gears fit in the upper half of the casing, and the turbine center line distances are taken into account to avoid any overlapping of gears at the vertical center line. Examples are shown for single, double, and triple reduction gear designs, and also a combined diesel and gas turbine (CODAG) design. Weight and overall length comparisons are shown for various designs as well as the effect of varying individual parameters.
