FULL-SCALE INVESTIGATIONS OF GROUND-WATER PRESSURE ON TUNNEL LINING

Suggestions are presented herein for the solution of problems associated with the design of drainage systems and consolidation grouting. These problems relate to: the existence of a great variety of geologic and hydrologic conditions, as well as of layout and construction solutions for underground structures; the complexity of reproducing the initial field data for laboratory or mathematical modeling; insufficient data for quantitative evaluation of the behaviour of drainage systems and consolidation grouting; the need for taking into account in many cases, the infiltration through concrete linings of structures; and the complexity, high cost, and length of the field investigations for acquisition of intitial data. The determination of the coefficient of areal porosity of the medium at the boundary between the concrete lining and the rock is discussed, as well as the permeability of concrete linings and the determination of the coefficient of permeability of tunnel and shaft linings. Methods for measuring the leakage from pressure tunnels and shafts by means of the ground-water pressure are outlined, and the need is indicated for full-scale investigations of infiltration. Recommendations are made regarding the procedure for infiltration investigations of underground hydraulic structures.
