GLULAM TIMBER COULD FIGURE PROMINENTLY IN BOOMING BRIDGE REPLACEMENT MARKET
A heavy-duty wooden bridge deck system has been developed which meets requirements of durability and economy. The system involves extensive use of glued laminated timbers or glulam, and serves both as a structural load carrying element and as a protecting roof over stringers. The system, which exhibits durability and reserve strength in dynamic loading situation, is prefabricated, and on-site assembly is rapid. The construction of the bridge system is briefly outlined. One new method made possible by glulam involves placing the panels transversely to the stringers. Experimental evaluations show performance to be superior to that of the conventional rail-laminated decks. Various design applications are briefly discussed, and comments are made on the use of the glue laminated hardwood members in the construction of a 72-foot bridge.
