A SURVEY OF MATERIALS FOR SALVAGE SYSTEMS
This paper comments on the need for higher strength materials for components of salvage systems and reviews several modern materials of the HY series and maraging steels as well as titanium. The analysis of each material is based on the relationship among performance parameters such as nil-ductility transition temperature, dynamic tear energy, yield strength, and stress corrosion cracking threshold which have been determined by the Naval Research Laboratory. Wire and synthetic ropes are discussed. Results of tests on components fabricated from HY 80 steel are addressed and projections to future application of high strength metals and synthetics are made.
