STRESS CORROSION CRACK PATHS IN AL-ZN-MG ALLOYS

The exact location of the crack path in the stress corrosion of Al-Zn-Mg alloys is relevant to the contributions which the various structural parameters that have been shown to relate to cracking propensity make to the cracking mechanism. It is shown that the crack paths are normally coincident with the grain boundaries, rather than the adjacent precipitate free zones. The role of the latter in the crack path propagation process, together with some other parameters, may be in facilitating local plastic deformation whereby dissolution, which is largely concentrated upon the grain boundary precipitate, is maintained.
