THYRISTOR-RECTIFIER AC/DC DRIVES FOR RUSSIA'S HARBOUR ICEBREAKERS-KAPITAN KOSOLAPOV, ETC
Three 3,400-sjp harbour icebreaker/tugs are being built for Sudo-import by Wartsila. The first two, Kapitan M. Jzmailov and Kapitan Kosolapov, have been delivered, and the third, Kapitan Radzabov, was due for delivery by the end of 1976. Classification is to USSR Register KM UL 1A1 requirements. These Diesel-electric twin-screw ships, which have unmanned machinery spaces, incorporate thyristor-controlled d.c. armature circuits (earlier icebreakers have had thyristors for field circuits only). This system was chosen to minimize the number of Diesel engines installed. Each ship has a single "power station" which supplies the propulsion motors and the auxiliary systems. The plant consists of four 1,340-bhp, 750-rpm Wartsila Diesels, each direct-coupled to an 1,800-kVA, 600-V Stromberg alternator specially designed for thyristor-rectifier applications. The two Stromberg d.c. propulsion motors, which also embody special features to suit this type of rectification and are controlled by power regulation, are rated 1,550 kW at 240-330 rpm and have a torque rating of 60 kNm (max. 120 kNm); they are direct-coupled to the propeller shafts. The thyristor- rectifiers, which are fan-cooled, have been designed to handle twice the rated current of the propulsion motors to allow for the maximum torque requirement, and have the following rating; Voltage 600 V, 50 Hz/650 V d.c.; Current 2,550 A (cont.), 5,100 A (90 sec.). The heavy-current users, such as the towing winches, air-bubbler compressors, and fire-pumps are fed from the primary 600-V a.c. bus-bars. The article gives further information on these power-supply arrangements, and includes a circuit diagram of the electrical system. A profile drawing of the ship is also included.
