FULL CONTAINER SHIPS FOR RUSSIA-MERKUR-CLASS SHIPS KHUDOZHNIK SARYAN AND KHUDOZHNIK IOGANSON

The Khudozhnik Saryan and Khodozhnik Ioganson, the first two ships of the Merkur series, a numerous class of fully-cellular container ships being built at the Warnowwerf, East Germany, have entered the service of FESCO, the Far East Shipping Co., of Vladivostok, and are employed on the route between Nakhoda (near Vladivostok) and the N.W. Pacific coast, via Japan. The article, which briefly describes this class of ship and includes general-arrangement drawings, mentions some substantial differences between the original concept and the present design; breadth has been slightly increased, fewer containers are carried, and a six cylinder Sulzer RND90 has been fitted instead of an eight-cylinder engine of this type. There are four holds forward of the superstructure and machinery, and one aft. Total container capacity is 729 TEUs, of which 112 are carried on deck; there are power-points for 81 refrigerated containers, and 40-ft containers can be stowed in the holds and on deck. The ships have been some time under construction, but ships of the series are now being completed at shorter intervals. They are by far the largest Comecon container-ships, but their size will soon be surpassed by the Gdansk-built Caribia Express.
