PRECRUSHED GRANULATED SLAG

LES LAITIERS GRANULES PREBOYES.

The authors recall the increasing use in France since 1961 of the slag-gravel technique in road construction. The quantity used every year exceeds 10 million tons. One of the interesting developments of precrushed slag is its use as binder: precrushed slag is obtained by crushing granulated slag, and it consists of 0.2 mm sand containing approximately 10% of ingredients smaller than 80 microns. Details are given of various crushing tests, of tests with different types of aggregate, of results on some construction sites and of the perspectives offered by this type of binder in road construction. Its advantages are described: it sets easily, is very economical as it permits a reduction in binder content, and is very useful to stabilize poor-quality, local materials such as sand obtained from desilting operations and fine sand. /TRRL/
