RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN VEHICLE NOISE CONTROL
The article summarizes results of research at several organizations. A description is given of work at Fodens Ltd to develop a quiet lorry producing a noise level of about 80 dba. Methods of reducing exhaust and cooling system noise are discussed. In-cab noise levels have also been investigated. Instrumentation and analysis techniques adopted by the Ford Motor Company to reduce noise, vibration and harshness are described. A portable recording system has been developed which allows on-line analysis or magnetic tape recording of data for future processing. Methods used to simulate the acoustic environment are discussed. Research at Daimler-Benz (UK) into noise insulation methods is described. These include investigations into the production of noise and its transmission paths. Subjective assessments of the character of noise are being made. Cab treatments for tractors and other plant developed by Revertex Acoustics is described. The article concludes with an extract from the TRRL Annual Report for 1975 on Quiet Vehicle Developments. /TRRL/
