STEEL-PLANT SLAG CINDERS

Steel-plant slag cinders contain mainly lime, iron oxides and silica. X-rays show the presence of calcium orthosilicate, calcium ferrite, wustite, calcium and iron oxide, and lime varying in degree of hydration. Because of the satisfactory mechanical properties, these cinders have been considered as aggregates for the construction of surfacings. Current studies of the stability of these materials are being conducted together with investigations into the influence of hydration as regards the adhesion of organic binders. Research is also being carried out on the distribution of free lime in cinders and its influence on mechanical strength. Simultaneously, experimental in-situ test are being performed. /TRRL/
