BEHAVIOR STUDIES FOR A HIGHWAY TUNNEL
The paper discusses various aspects of a program to instrument and monitor two sites in the second bore of the Eisenhower Memorial Tunnel as part of an overall FHWA research program. The tunnel will be approximately 46 ft in diameter when axcavated. The study is designed to generat4e data on: changes in the state of stress, and movements during and after tunneling; tunnel lining design requirements; developing a more efficient, accurate, and precise system for determining subsurface conditions at tunnel sites; and generally monitoring variables during construction of new highway tunnels. Although the highway tunnel will be larger than most previously constructed water tunnels, the research results are expected to find application in water conveyance projects.
