INTERNAL WORK UNITS DEVELOPED
The hull construction work unit developed by IHI permitted the delivery of a 372,000 dwt 10 months after construction started. The ship was in many respects a prototype design. The work units are basically automatically controlled scaffolding capable of movement in a lateral and/or vertical direction. Four types of work units have been developed. All the units can accommodate heavier components than manually erected scaffolding. The units weigh up to 160 tons. A unit can carry hydraulic jigs, welding equipment for 50 arcs, high pressure gas equipment, lighting equipment and a communication system. The article shows detailed photos of the work platforms.
