A REVIEW OF ENGINE NOISE CONTROL
The author outlines the background to the research into noise control conducted during the last 15 years by the Perkins Engine company. Noise reductions of between 3 and 6 dba can be obtained by use of a package that can be applied to various engines. The development of a quiet engine known as the 6 is described. The disappointing results given by this engine were thought to be due to the incorporation of empirically designed features. Research into a new method of predicting noise at the design stage was started in 1973 using the new comprehensive noise test facilities at Perkins which are described. The prediction of engine vibration is being carried out using finite element structural analysis applied to very simple elements. The author describes the construction of a special "research engine" developed to check the predictive technique. Tests on the engine show a reduction of nearly 11 dba on cylinder block noise compared with a standard engine. The research at present is aimed at establishing the structural features responsible for block noise. Future research is to include a study into the subjective content of engine noise. /TRRL/
