ACCELERATED TESTING TO DETERMINE COMPLIANCE
The 28 day test to determine the compressive strength properties of concrete and thus exercise control of production is considered by the author to be outdated. Accelerated methods of testing for quality control purposes are now available, and reference is made to the grant method. This method is currently being studied by the standing committee for British standard specification 1881:1970 - methods of testing concrete. Essentially, the equipment as described and discussed consists of a galvanised water tank measuring approximately 610 mm by 765 mm by 610 mm. Fitted into the bottom of the tank are two 6 kilowatt heating elements which are protected from damage by a steel grill on which the concrete test specimens will be 'cooked'. The elements are coupled to a Cambridge thermograph set to maintain the water temperature at 82 degrees C. The production of test cubes is described, and emphasis placed on the need to monitor changes in the quality of the materials used and of batching accuracy in order to establish values to meet specified conditions. The benefits to be derived from accelerated test techniques are discussed, and include knowing within 24 hours of producing concrete that it has been produced correctly, and the reduction in time before the striking of formwork. /TRRL/
