CONSOLIDATION OF PARTLY SATURATED VISCOUS SOILS
A numerical method of solving the differential equation of consolidation is presented which takes account of partly saturated layers of viscous soils. Their deformability has been considered according to extrapolated secondary branches of consolidation curves of oedometer samples. In the cases treated the void ratio decreases, along the above branches, with the logarithm of time, while along isotachs it decreases with the logarithm of effective pressure. The resulting isochrones and plots relating pore pressures, void ratios and their rates versus time show the influence of the degree of saturation load interval, initial porosity and layer thickness on the consolidation process. /TRRL/
