DATA PRESENTATION, PRESERVATION AND RECOVERY

The author outlines the geological information that is of value to the engineer, the types of records that are used and methods of data preservation and recovery that are available. The first outlines the work that has been carried out by iso and the geological society engineering carried out by ISO and the Geological Society Engineering the need for increased standardization for computer data storage. Record sources and types of record are next discussed, followed by an outline of methods of data preservation and the author's views on ideal data recovery. He concludes that better presentation of geological information would be of value to the engineer and the public and that preservation and recovery is becoming more essential now that costs of obtaining the information are rapidly increasing. He points out that computer and micro-miniaturization methods have made many advances, gives an example of how they have been used by the ordnance survey and suggests that they should be used for engineering geology work. /TRRL/
