DEBUT FOR BRIDGE SYSTEM
This very brief article describes a bridge building technique used on the continent which is having its first application in this country. It uses a form of precast, prestressed segmental construction for the deck of a three-span bridge over the main line railway at Sonning, near Reading. The bridge forms part of the a4 trunk road improvement being carried out for Berkshire County Council as agent for the DOE. Deck units for the 90 M long, three-span bridge are cast at the abutment. Each unit is 3 M deep and weighs 145 t. The contractor is making use of a launching nose which has been fabricated from steel sections and weighs some 25 t. The first unit was cast and connected by mcalloy bars to the launching nose. The gantry was then slid forward and the second unit cast and stressed to the first. The gantry was slid forward and the process repeated. /TRRL/
