MOTIONS RESPONSE OF A SERIES OF {VERTICAL FLOAT-SUPPORTED PLATFORMS IN IRREGULAR SEAS

A related series of float supported platforms have been model tested to evaluate their motions response in irregular waves. Model configurations were chosen similar to design studies carried out for water-based aircraft. Effects of variations in major design parameters, such as float slenderness, damping plate size, and metacentric height, for head and beam seas, with three- and four-float configurations, have been studied. Response information is presented in two ways, as transfer functions and as impulse response functions, so that either spectral or time history interpretations may be made. Non-dimensional results are applicable to craft having different displace- ments. Applications of this type of flotation system include air-sea craft, drill rigs, special buoys, and many others.
