EARTHMOVING, A MODERN TECHNIQUE
TERRASSER, UNE TECHNIQUE MODERNE.
A study is made of the evolution in earthworks over the last few years. Increasingly large volumes of earth can be moved, but the quantity is however limited by costs and care of the environment. The trend in equipment is for more powerful and higher output machines which are, however, more compact, the main examples of which are hydraulic shovels and vibrating rollers - continuous extraction and haulage operations are possible improvements to be implemented. The in-situ stabilization with lime and cement is being increasingly used, thus permitting savings in transport. The utilization of synthetic fabrics with soil offer numerous interesting solutions and is being developed. The project stage and preparation of sites are the fields where improvements could be made to ensure higher quality and reliability. Attention is drawn to the guidelines: "recommendation for road construction earthworks" (lcpc - setra 1976). Some basic concepts have changed, such as the importance of layer thickness in compaction, and new materials have appeared, such as reinforced earth. /TRRL/
